Even if your dog rarely has housetraining accidents, when these accident occur, they can be a pain to clean up. Even after cleaning the actual urine from the carpet, the smell can remain. The smell of dog urine is very distinctive, making it uncomfortable to be in that room, embarrassing to have company over and difficult to sell your home. Eliminate dog urine smell in carpet by using a vinegar and water solution.
Instructions
Start by finding the urine stain. Look for dark, wet spots on the carpet. If the urine stain is older, it may already be dried and the only sign may be a slightly yellowish discoloration. If you can detect the urine smell but cannot seem to find the urine stain, try using a portable black light machine. Your dog's urine stains will glow yellow or green under ultraviolet light and may be easier to find.
Clean the stain with a commercial urine odor deodorizer. You can also use a mixture of apple cider vinegar and water. The mixture should be one part vinegar to every two parts water. Spray the urine stain until it is slightly damp. Press a few paper towels down over the urine stain to soak up the moisture. Allow the area to dry. It may take several hours, depending on the size of the stain.
Sprinkle baking soda over the urine stain area and leaving sitting for about an hour. Vacuum the baking soda.
If the urine smell is still present, consider having the carpets professionally cleaned and deodorized.
