Spray Collars for Dogs

Citronella spray collars have been available in the United States since 1995 as an alternative to shock collars to treat nuisance barking.

  1. How It Works

    • Whenever your dog barks, a microphone on the spray collar senses it and sprays your dog with a strongly-scented oil.

    Why It Works

    • Your dog comes to associate its barking with getting sprayed by the collar. Because the spraying happens every time the dog barks, it will be less likely to bark in order to avoid this unpleasant episode.

    Advantages

    • Spray collars are more humane than shock collars, and according to a study cited in Cornell News, they work just as well as, and in some cases better than shock collars.

    Disadvantages

    • In the same study, some dog owners complained about the oil staining upholstery. Others had difficulty with the microphone being too sensitive and spraying the dog when other dogs were barking, which is unfair to the dog being trained.

    Where To Find One

    • Citronella spray collars are available in pet supply stores across the country.
