Tips on Training You Puppy To Use a Dog Litter Box

Training a puppy to use a litter box is an easy way to provide consistent training during inclement weather. It also allows those unable to provide frequent trips outside the peace of mind needed for dog ownership.

  1. What dogs can be trained to use a litter box?

    • Small breed dogs will have the most success with litter box training. Yorkshire terriers (Yorkies), Maltese and poodles are all good candidates for litter box training. Large breed dogs will outgrow a litter box quickly and accidents will occur in surrounding areas. To ensure easy cleaning of the litter box area, make sure the litter box is large enough for your puppy. Most dogs will circle before doing their business, so there needs to be ample room inside the litter box for these rituals. Purchase the largest cat litter pan available or make one large enough for the puppy. Make sure the sides are low enough for the puppy to get in and out of the box by itself. Surround the litter box with puppy training pads to help with accidents during the training process.

Be consistent when training a puppy to use a litter box

    • House training is the most important part of dog ownership and promotes a long happy relationship between owner and pet. Training a puppy to use a litter box is no different from house breaking. The key is for everyone involved in the training to be consistent with rules.

Show the puppy where the litter box is located immediately. Set the puppy in the litter box and let it get in and out by itself. Watch the puppy for any elimination and praise it immediately when successful. Set a timer and take the puppy to the litter box on a regular basis throughout the day until it starts to go by itself. Watch the puppy closely for signs of needing to relieve itself (whining, wandering/sniffing) and take it to the litter box as necessary. Always praise the dog immediately upon successfully using the litter box. Scoop the litter daily and sweep up any litter outside the box so the puppy is not tempted to go outside of the box.

Transitioning to outside from using a litter box

    • Dogs are creatures of habit. Do not assume that a dog will go potty outside if it has not been trained to do so. An easy method for transitioning a dog trained to use a litter box to go outside is by placing a litter box outside. The dog will understand the feel beneath its feet as the area to do its business. To further transition the puppy out of the litter box, sprinkle litter on the ground without the box so the dog will still feel comfortable eliminating there. Keep a litter box inside for emergencies. It may be impossible to completely break the dog of using litter.

Types of litter to use for puppies

    • Puppies do not require a special litter. For easy clean up, consider the clumping cat litter. Clumping litter also will save money as only the used litter is scooped away. Stay away from perfumed litters as allergies can occur. Scented litters also can act as a deterrent for puppies with a sensitive nose. If they don't like the smell, they will not visit the area. Look for bulk litter offered at farm stores for the cheapest price range. As dogs urinate more heavily than cats, much more litter will be necessary. Use recycled paper litter for an environmentally friendly alternative to clay clumping litters.
