Attack Dog Training Tips

Training dogs to be attack dogs is not an easy task. Attack dog training is best done by an experienced professional trainer. If you're planning on training an attack dog, you may want to follow some of these useful tips. The main purpose of training an attack dog is to protect its owner, and these tips can help you to do so safely.

  1. Commands

    • Before a dog is trained to attack, it must first master simple commands such as "heel", "sit", "stay" and "come." These commands should be used consistently and constantly so the dog is familiar with them and grasps the concept of obeying its owner. Not until the dog has mastered these commands can it be trained as an attack dog.

The basic command taught is "attack," directing the dog get hold of the aggressor. Just as important is the "release" command. This is actually more difficult to learn because sometimes, once the dog gets a good grip, it's hard to train it to let go.

    Protective Suits

    • When teaching the attack command, it is important that the person being attacked wear a protective suit. Protective clothing can range from a bite sleeve to a full bite suit, made from a tough outer sleeve over padding.

    On-Leash and Off-Leash Training

    • Training begins on a leash, which gives the trainer greater control over the dog. The trainer is able to give the attack command and release his grip on the leash, allowing the dog to get hold of the aggressor. The trainer then tightens his grip and pulls on the lease in conjunction with the release command. Next, the dog is trained to attack and release off-leash following verbal commands.

    Rewards

    • Don't forget to reward your dog with treats every time it's able to follow a command. Treats helps her to understand that what she's doing is correct. Treats should only be given to the dog by the trainer, so do not let strangers give treats to the dog. Be certain that treats are only given to reward good behavior.

Keep in mind that attack dog training is not a simple process and there are different levels of such training. You may want to try to contact a professional trainer if you plan on more advanced attack training. In addition, some states consider attack dogs to be weapons, so be sure to do your research about the laws in your state.
