How to Troubleshoot a PetSafe Collar

When you have installed a PetSafe wire in your yard, it may work for a while and then the collar may suddenly appear to stop working. There are a number of problems that may be involved with this sort of issue, so it's important to look at all possible reasons for the collar's failure.

Things You'll Need

  • PetSafe collar Extra batteries (if needed)

Check the transmitter. If the collar doesn't appear to be working, it may be because of a break in the wire. If both lights on the transmitter are lit, indicating it is on and that there is a full circuit connection, go to step 4.

    • 2

If the power on the transmitter is off altogether, check that the power plug is in the outlet and plugged into the transmitter. If this doesn't get the power to turn on, you may need a new transmitter or plug. These two items are covered by the company's lifetime warranty, but you will need your proof of purchase to invoke your warranty rights.

If the power is on, but the circuit is broken, check to make sure both wire ends are connected to the transmitter. If they aren't, this is why the connection is broken---simply plug in the wire again.
If both wires are in the transmitter, go along the fence line and make sure that you cannot see any breaks in the line. If there are any noticeable breaks, strip the wires and reconnect the circuit.
If you cannot find the break, you may need to reinstall the wire altogether. This will be much like the first installation only a little easier since you already have the path drawn out.

Check the collar itself. Are the prongs connected right? Is the battery chamber closed and clean of dirt and debris? These are simple things that may make the collar malfunction.

Check the batteries. If all else fails, you may need to spend some money and try installing new batteries in the collar. If this still doesn't work, you'll need to buy a new collar. As with any technology, things do get worn out and ruined.
If you still have the proof of purchase, check with the company to see if it's under warranty.
