How to Troubleshoot a PetSafe Fence

The PetSafe wireless pet fence is an electronic pet containment system developed and manufactured by the Radio Systems Corporation. The PetSafe fence is safe and humane for all dogs or cats that weigh over 9 pounds, though it is predominantly used for dogs. The pet's human companion sets up a wireless transmitter that creates a wireless zone and communicates with the pet's collar. If the pet goes beyond the wireless zone, the collar delivers a small static shock until the pet returns to the fenced area. Thus, dogs or cats can be trained to stay within a certain area of the yard without the owner needing to setup a physical fence. Sometimes, the PetSafe product needs troubleshooting to resolve occasional problems with the collar or transmitter.

Instructions

    • 1

Ensure the wireless product's main transmitter, which communicates with the PetSafe collar, is plugged into a power source and is powered on. The light on the front of the transmitter should be illuminated, signifying it is running.

    • 2

Replace the batteries in the PetSafe collar. If the collar's battery has died, the receiver will no longer communicate with the transmitter and will not shock your pet when he leaves the wireless fence area.

    • 3

Trim the fur around the pet's neck to increase the effectiveness of the collar's static shock if your pet does not respond to the PetSafe product. Additionally, raise the level of static delivered if your pet is a large animal.

    • 4

Move any large metal objects that may be near the PetSafe fence's transmitter. Such metal objects may interfere with the wireless signal and distort the effectiveness of the transmitter. A common cause of interference may be vehicles that park near the wireless pet zone. If you continue to encounter interference, attempt to move the transmitter to another part of your yard.
