How to Train a Puppy to Use Puppy Pads

Housebreaking a new puppy may be a challenge but for those who live in apartments it can be a real hassle. Puppy pads may be the answer. If you don't have a yard and need to housebreak your puppy without taking him outside several times a day, you can use puppy training pads to housebreak your puppy. They also work during inclement weather.

Things You'll Need

  • Puppy training pads
  • Puppy crate
  • Leash and collar

Instructions

    • 1

Find a place to put your puppy pads and consistently put them in that place. Always take your puppy to the same place. It can be near a door if you are going to eventually teach him to eliminate outside, or wherever you would place a litter box. This will help define the area that your puppy must target and help him understand that this area is different than other parts of the house.

    • 2

Place your puppy in his crate when you are not there to directly supervise your puppy. His crate should be small, just enough so that he can stand, turn around and lie down comfortably but no larger. This way he can not divide it into a bathroom area and a sleeping area. Never leave a young puppy in a crate for more than four hours.

    • 3

Carry him to his puppy pads after meals, after naps and if you have been away from the house. Immediately put him on his puppy pads and say "go potty" "good potty" or "hurry" to help him understand to do his business. If he does not go to the bathroom in this defined area take him back to his crate for a while, then try again.

    • 4

Praise him exuberantly if he does go in his puppy potty area. Put the leash on him and play with him for a while before putting him back into his crate. This will help him make good associations with eliminating on the puppy pads.
