How to Help a Puppy With Excited Urination

Does your little puppy pee every time you come home or when guests come over? If so, Fido may be struggling with excited or submissive urination. Although this tends to happen more often with females, many puppies can go through this stage, which lasts about 6 months. You just need some tips on how to deal with this somewhat messy part of puppy raising.

Instructions

Ignore your excited dog. Though it is tempting to give your pup loads of attention when you come home, it is imperative to ignore him until he is calm. Ignoring your puppy means not only no physical contact, but also no eye contact or verbal communication.

Once your dog has calmed down, insist on the sit command. Crouch down to his level before petting him. Hovering is a dominant signal that may intimidate your dog into urinating.

If your pup is still struggling, take him directly outside into the backyard before greeting him. Work on Steps 1 and 2, while you are there. This is also a good place for guests to greet your puppy. Being outside is a good distraction, and also keeps things clean.
