Teaching Dogs to Sleep on the Floor

Dogs are social creatures who enjoy being with their human companions. Like people, they also appreciate soft surroundings, and a couch, chair or bed are all viewed as attractive sleeping places̵2;especially when they smell like you. If you want to keep human furniture to yourself, start training your pup early to sleep on the floor in a designated spot.

Instructions

Establish firm rules and don't let your dog get up on furniture under any circumstances. Sleeping on furniture is a tough habit to break once established, so if you want your dog to sleep on the floor, start training him to this spot from the first day you bring him home. Encourage everyone in the household to maintain this rule to ensure no exceptions will lead to confusion for your pup.

Create one or more comfortable and inviting sleeping spots for your dog on the floor. You may opt to purchase a dog bed that goes on the floor or even create a comfortable environment using blankets or an egg crate mattress pad. One reason dogs are attracted to human furniture is that it is comfortable, particularly if your dog is older or has joint problems. The more comfy you make a spot on the floor, the easier it will be to train him to go there.

Put favorite toys and snacks in your dog̵7;s floor bed so it's a welcoming place to be. Use obedience training methods to get your dog used to floor sleeping, issuing commands like, ̶0;Go to bed̶1; and giving him a treat when he follows your instruction. Lead your dog to his bed on his leash, if necessary, and reward him when he lies down. Give praise and positive reinforcement to your dog when he sleeps on his floor spot.
