There are a few exceptions to the leash law. Dogs are not required to be leashed when they are:
- In a dog park or other designated off-leash area.
- On the owner's property.
- Being actively used for hunting, herding, or other lawful purpose.
However, even when a dog is not required to be leashed, it must still be under the owner's control at all times. The owner must be able to recall the dog and prevent it from running away or causing any damage or injury.
If a dog is found running at large in violation of the leash law, the owner may be subject to a fine of up to $500. The dog may also be impounded and held until the owner pays the fine.
It is important to note that the leash law is in place for the safety of both people and dogs. By keeping your dog on a leash, you are helping to protect them from getting lost, injured, or involved in a fight. You are also helping to protect other people from being bitten or attacked by your dog.
