Why dogs have retractable claws?

Dogs do not have retractable claws. Cats are the animals with retractable claws.

Dogs have claws that are always extended, and they use them for a variety of reasons, including:

* Digging: Dogs use their claws to dig holes for shelter, bury bones, or simply for fun.

* Climbing: Some dogs, like terriers, have strong claws that help them climb.

* Walking and running: Claws provide traction and help dogs maintain their balance.

* Defense: Dogs use their claws to defend themselves if necessary.

The retractile claws of cats are different because they are hidden within a sheath of skin when not in use. This keeps them sharp and prevents them from being worn down.
