They were specifically bred in Germany in the late 19th century by Captain Max von Stephanitz, who aimed to create a versatile working dog. The breed was initially called the "Alsatian Wolf Dog" and later became known as the "German Shepherd Dog".
While the breed's name might lead some to think they originate from Germany, they are indeed named after their country of origin.
