This is a misconception. When checking a dog's ears, judges look for proper structure, size, and placement in relation to the dog's head. They examine the ears for any deformities or imperfections, such as missing cartilage or an incorrect set.
The judge will gently feel the ears to check for thickness and texture. They will also look at the ear leather for any signs of inflammation or infection.
Pulling on a dog's ears is not only unnecessary but potentially harmful. It can cause pain and discomfort, and could even damage the delicate tissues of the ear.
AKC judges are trained to handle dogs professionally and respectfully, and they would never intentionally cause any harm.
