Contact a cocker spaniel breeder to inquire about their female cocker spaniels. Use the American Kennel Club's website to find a reputable breeder in your area. When you contact a breeder, ask them questions about their breeding policies and procedures. Make sure they keep their dogs in an area that is clean and healthy for the animal.
Examine your male cocker spaniel's body for his color. Cocker spaniels are either a solid color or have black and white markings. The Zim Family Cockers website states that it's a general rule that you don't mate cocker spaniels with different patterns. The female solid color cocker spaniels should mate with the male solid color cocker spaniels and vice versa. When you are looking for a female cocker spaniel for your male, look for one with the same color pattern.
Ensure the female cocker spaniel is current on its shots. When you visit the breeder and pick your dog, it is important to obtain the documentation on her shots. At this point, the breeder should disclose any health problems the dog may have, if any. If you are planning to mate your male cocker spaniel with a female cocker spaniel, you should purchase a healthy dog or the services of a health dog from the breeder. When you purchase your female cocker spaniel, make sure to the get the AKC registration from the breeder. The AKC registration proves that your female cocker spaniel is a purebred.
