Instructions
Count the days since her mating. Yorkie mothers whelp their pups within 58 to 65 days of a successful mating. This gives you a range of time to watch over.
Watch the mother. Mother yorkies who are about to whelp may engage in nesting behavior. They may settle themselves into their nesting box, arranging the material in it to their liking or bringing more material to the box.
Listen to the mother. Shortly before giving birth, yorkies tend to be distressed and they show this through whimpering and crying. At this point, give her plenty of attention and praise.
Take the yorkie's temperature with a well-lubricated thermometer. The dog's temperature is typically between 101 and 102.5 degrees Fahrenheit. About 24 hours before a yorkie gives birth, her temperature drops to below 100 degrees Fahrenheit.
