What Are Pocket Puggles?

It's a pug. It's a beagle. Actually, it's a puggle. This is breed of dog known as a "designer dog." They are a mixed-breed of pug and beagle. In most cases, the term "pocket puggle" refers to a puggle that is smaller than average, though these dogs are not actually a breed of their own. Pocket puggles have the same personality and physical traits, aside from their smaller size, as average puggles.

  1. A Breed of Their Own

    • Puggles are created by breeding pugs with beagles. In each case, a pure-bred beagle must be crossed with a pure-bred pug. Puggles are not generally bred with other puggles to make second or third generation dogs. The puggle is not a breed that is recognized by the American Kennel Club.

    Size

    • The average Puggle weighs anywhere between 15 and 30 lbs. once it is fully grown. Like their parents' breeds, they are classified as small dogs. "Pocket" puggles are dogs that are even smaller than average. These smaller dogs can be at risk of health problems. If you are looking for a "pocket" puggle, you should also be aware that some sellers market dogs that are rat terrier/pug mixes as puggles. Ask your breeder as many questions as possible to ensure that the pocket puggle you are getting is a true puggle and is healthy.

    Physical Characteristics

    • Most puggles are tan with a black mask on their face, but some can be black, white or even tricolor (tan, black and white). They have short fur, but they do tend to shed and should be brushed at least once a week to remove loose hair. Puggles have a longer snout than their pug parents, making breathing an easier task for them. They do bark and some may even enjoy howling, a trait which is passed on from the beagle side of their family tree.

    Temperament

    • Puggles are intelligent dogs that are easy to train. They are friendly and love to be around people, so they thrive in family environments. Puggles are social. They don't like to be left alone. Don't be surprised if your puggle follows you everywhere you go, even from one side of the room to the other. Puggles are curious and playful. They are a high-energy breed, so you should make sure that your puggle gets plenty of exercise. A daily walk and a game or two at home should be enough for this small dog. Puggles can become destructive if they get bored.
