Instructions
Take your dog for a full health check-up at your regular veterinarian. A stud dog must be in excellent health and meet all breed standards. You should talk with your veterinarian about your Bichon to ensure he understands the breed standards and health concerns. If your vet is unfamiliar with the breed or does not offer genetic testing, he may be able to refer you to someone who does. The Bichon Frise parent club can also be a resource for veterinarians. A full physical health check, complete with genetic screenings, should be done prior to your dog becoming a stud.
Familiarize yourself with the Bichons Frise breed standards by visiting the American Kennel Club or Bichons Frise Club of American. Here you will learn the specifications for size, markings and other acceptable characteristics. Some basic requirements for a Bichon Frise are between 9 1/2 and 11 1/2 inches tall at the shoulder, white colored coat with no more than 10 percent of apricot, buff or cream shadings and a gentle, playful temperament. Stud dogs or bitches that do not meet these standards should not be considered for breeding to prevent loss of integrity within the breed standard.
Contact your local Bichon Frise Kennel or Parent Club to discuss using your dog as a stud dog. The motto of the American Kennel Club is "Breed to Improve". Your Bichon Frise might not be a champion dog, but he should have characteristics in comparison to his mating bitch to breed a litter of sound, healthy puppies. For example, if your mating bitch has coloring deficits, your stud dog should be nearly perfect in his coloring to ensure the puppies born meet the breed standards.
Talk with other breeders about mating techniques, fees and other necessary information in studding your dog. Mating can be done several ways, from actual intercourse of the dogs to artificial insemination with fresh or frozen semen. Natural breeding (intercourse of the animals) is recommended, with human assistance to place the dogs in proper positioning if necessary. Artificial insemination is done by having your stud ejaculate into a plastic cup and inseminating the bitch using a plastic or glass tube.
Advertise your stud dog through various media forms, such as newspaper ads, internet websites or word of mouth. Your parent club can help you find other breeders and may act as a referral service if you prove yourself to be a worthy and reputable breeder. The AKC will allow you to list your services on their website if you have a currently registered litter or will provide your puppies with AKC papers.
Stud fees are determined during each individual breeding and can vary from litter to litter. The AKC does not regulate stud fees, which can range from cash to pick of the resulting litter. You should speak with the bitch's owner prior to mating and have a written contract detailing the terms of your stud fees.
