How to Offer Your Dog for Stud Service

If you have a male dog that has not been neutered, then your dog is a "stud" in breeding terms. Although you might not want to neuter your dog for various reasons (you might simply not want him to go through surgery, for example) one of them is that you may be interested in breeding him. One way to ensure your dog's genetic information is passed on is to offer him for stud service to a licensed breeder.

  Obtain your dog's pedigree from his breeder. A pedigree is a series of documents and certificates that trace your dog's lineage and that others can use to verify that he is purebred. Contact your breeder and ask him to send you this document before you attempt to hire your dog out for stud service. Make several copies of the documents in case you lose them in the future.

  Contact breeders in your area who deal with dogs of your stud's breed. Read the classified ads in your local newspaper or search Yahoo!, Bing or Google with the term "(your dog's breed) breeder (your city name)," for example "Dalmatian breeder Minneapolis." Inquire with each breeder as to whether he needs a stud, when he needs the stud and any special requirements he has.

  Make an appointment with any interested breeders, and take along copies of your dog's pedigree for inspection. During the meeting, the breeder will inspect your dog as well, making sure his markings, body shape and size correspond with the type of stud he needs. Ask the breeder any questions you might have, including when and for how long he'll need your dog and how and when you'll be compensated.

  Place an ad in your local newspaper, classifieds leaflet or online if your search for a breeder comes up empty, or if you're simply dissatisfied with breeders you meet.
