Instructions
Branch the family generations of each cocker spaniel and poodle you have in your possession. The cocker spaniel and the poodle do not have to be pure bred, but at least be 50/50 pure for the father and mother.
Learn the temperament of each parent. Cockapoos are generally sweet animals and if the cocker spaniel or poodle parent has a negative temperament, then there could be a high likelihood of those traits being passed on to the cockapoo.
Investigate the parents' dimensions. Make sure the parents have leveled and aligned teeth and non-shedding hair. Any coat from the parent is fine; cockapoos can have any color fur. However, cockapoos must maintain high fur density since their genes tend to cater toward colder climates.
Weigh each parent. The heaviest cockapoos tend to be around 19 pounds. The average weight for these animals is around 13 pounds. There are some cockapoos that can weigh about six pounds. Whatever the case, make sure the parents' weights and nutritional diets will not produce an obese or extremely underweight cockapoo.
See how well the parents interact with all age groups. The ideal cockapoo is able to live with any age bracket peacefully. Cockapoos are great companions for children as well as the elderly. If the parent dogs do not seem loyal or playful, this could negatively impact the cockapoo.
Join the American Cockapoo Club once the cockapoo has been produced. This Club helps network your cockapoo and your breeding across the United States. There is a one-time joining fee of $25 and the club gives you a profile that is networked to interested cockapoo owners.
How to Breed Cockapoos
Cockapoos are an intelligent hybrid dog between poodles and cocker spaniels. Since the dog is a hybrid, there are no extensive breeding networks between cockapoos. Instead, breeders utilize the cocker spaniel and the poodle to create the cockapoo. However, there are some networks of breeders who do breed cockapoos between hybrids specifically. In either case, there are helpful ways to properly breed a cockapoo and effectively give a new owner this wonderful animal.
