What Signs Are Shown If a Dog Is Pregnant?

If you have chosen not to have your female dog spayed, you may one day find that your dog is pregnant. Pregnancy in dogs is not marked by the same symptoms as pregnancy in humans and may be difficult to spot. Always check with a veterinarian if your dog exhibits any of the symptoms of an impending litter.
  1. Change in Appetite

    • During the early stages of pregnancy, your dog will exhibit signs of a decreased appetite and may not eat at all. This lack of appetite is the canine equivalent to the morning sickness experienced by female humans. As the pregnancy progresses, your dog's appetite will rapidly increase and may be accompanied by sudden weight gain.

    Fatigue

    • One of the most common symptoms of pregnancy in dogs is a major change in stamina. As hormonal changes begin to take place within your puppy, the dog will start to sleep more throughout the day and exhibit signs of exhaustion and fatigue. The level of fatigue your dog experiences will increase as your pet gets closer to the due date.

    Behavioral Changes

    • Dogs who are pregnant may begin to nest and exhibit maternal instincts. Dogs who are nesting will begin to gather clothes, blankets and other warm materials to create a place to deliver the puppies. This location is known as a whelping box. Expectant dogs may also begin to exhibit mothering instincts toward objects such as shoes, plush toys or clothes.

    Physical Changes

    • When your dog is expecting puppies, you will notice some very obvious physical changes in your dog. These changes include weight gain in the abdomen, nipple growth and general swelling. The changes will begin to take place around the fourth week of the pregnancy and will last through the duration of the pregnancy.

    Discharge

    • The last major symptom of pregnancy in dogs is a visible discharge. You may begin to notice your dog secreting vaginal fluids or dragging its abdomen on the ground. Discharge may also be seen from the nipples during pregnancy.
