Pet Symptoms of Being Bit by a Black Widow

The black widow spider̵7;s bite can be fatal to your pet, so get your pet to a vet immediately if you suspect it has been bitten. These spiders are found in eastern North America, more commonly in the southeastern states. Dogs and cats are usually bitten when they disturb the spider̵7;s nest, which is usually found outdoors or in sheds or garages. The site of the spider bite does not usually swell, which makes it hard to find the area of the bite on your pet.
  1. Difference in Symptoms Between Pets

    • Symptoms of a black widow bite are the same for most pets, but all the symptoms listed may not be present. Pain caused by a spider bite is the only consistent symptom across the board. The severity of the symptoms will depend on the size of your animal and the amount of venom it received from the black widow bite.

Dogs tend to recover with prompt medical treatment. The venom causes abnormally high blood pressure in cats, which can be fatal. A black widow bite can be fatal for any animal.

    Pain

    • According to Pet MD, even though your pet may not feel it while they are being bitten, pain starts to set in immediately around the area of the bite. Pain progresses quickly and spreads to the lymph nodes nearest to the site of the bite. The pain reaches maximum intensity in one to three hours. Your pet may feel a constant pain during this time, or it may come in waves. The pain from this bite can last up to 48 hours.

    Muscles

    • Muscles become rigid, especially the abdominal muscles, and they may experience tremors. The pet may also feel pain in the muscles. Your pet may whine or become hesitant to move after experiencing a black widow bite. Limbs become weak and the pet may have trouble rising or walking.

    Breathing and Drooling

    • Breathing may become labored and the pet̵7;s heart rate becomes faster. The dog may appear to be constantly panting, and you may see an exaggerated movement of the rib cage area as if the pet is gasping for breath. You may also notice excessive drooling.

    Paralysis

    • Paralysis is the last stage of symptoms for your pet. Paralysis begin in the limbs and may spread to other organs, such as the lungs. The extent of the paralysis varies with the weight of the pet and the amount of venom the pet received.
