Deodorizer Use for Pets

One thing pet owners consistently wrestle with is deodorizing their pets as well as removing pet odors from their homes. Different deodorizers can be used on the pets to limit the odor. There are even homemade pet deodorizers you can mix to save money. Deodorizers neutralize pet odors that can permeate the carpet, furniture and body of your animal.
  1. Bathing

    • Even though bathing is a common way to deodorize your pets, it's unwise to bathe your pet frequently. Bathing the pet too much cause your pet's skin to become too dry and flake, as well as cause your pet to become itchy. Many pet supply companies that sell pet shampoos and conditioners also manufacture deodorizers and colognes that match the fragrance of the shampoo or conditioner. Use these deodorizers to neutralize the pet's odor between baths.

    Sprays

    • Pet deodorizers and colognes also come in spray form. These deodorizers are easy to use and don't create as much mess as other deodorizers. A small amount of the spray can eliminate the pet's odor. Premium deodorizers can also have conditioners to revitalize your pet's coat. Don't use a deodorizer spray that contains alcohol, because it can dry or irritate your pet's skin.

    Wipes

    • Some pet deodorizers can be purchased as wipes. When you notice that your pet is beginning to smell, pull out a cloth and wipe down your pet's coat. This type of deodorizer is good for traveling, because it won't leak or spill. Some premium wipes can keep your pet's coat healthy and shiny. The one disadvantage of using the wipes to deodorize your pet is they don't last as long as other deodorizers.

    Powders

    • Powders are a common pet deodorizer. The powder eliminates your pet's odor, but also keeps your pet dander free. You sprinkle the powder onto the coat of your pet and use a brush to distribute it into the coat. Powder deodorizers last longer than other remedies, but are messy. Use a powder deodorizer over a newspaper or old cloth material so it doesn't get all over the floor.

    Homemade

    • Purchasing deodorizers and colognes can be expensive. If you want to save money, you can choose to make your own pet deodorizers. Natural ingredients to use to mix a pet deodorizer are baking soda, arrowroot powder, lavender and essential oils like citronella, cedarwood or lemongrass. Applying the mixture to your pet eliminates the odor and repels fleas and other insects.
