How to Keep Dogs From Digging Out of a Yard Under a Wooden Fence

Dogs like to dig for any number of reasons, from burying a bone to just burning off some energy. If your dog is trying to dig under the fence, then it is either trying to get to something, or away from something. Regardless of the reason, the first step is to prevent you dog from getting out, then you can focus on the causes of the behavior.

Fill in any holes your dog has already dug, as well as any other indentations below the fence line. This will obstruct the dog̵7;s view of the outside world, and may curtail interest.

    • 2

Place chain-link fencing flat, just under the surface, for a width of about 1 foot from your fence. This will make it uncomfortable for the dog to walk there, but will not harm it in any way.

Help the dog exercise to burn off the extra energy that feeds its need to explore. You can do this by walking the dog, or playing fetch with it.
