How to Make Reusable Dog Diapers for Girl Dogs

Female dogs that have not been spayed go into heat on average twice a year, or every six to seven months. You dog will menstruate for about 21 days. Without the proper care, this can leave you with several messes to clean. While children's training pants can be used, making your own reusable dog diapers will cut down on waste and save you money. You can either make dog diapers from boys' briefs or completely make the diaper yourself.

Boys' briefs
Old T-shirts or flannel sheets
Scissors
Panty liners

Boys' Briefs

  Measure your dog's "waist" from the base of her lowest rib. Purchase the appropriate size boys' or men's briefs.

  Put the briefs on your dog backward, and gently pull her tail through the fly of the briefs.

  Check the briefs throughout the day and change as often as necessary.

  Measure your dog's "waist" from the base of her lowest rib and the distance from the bottom rib on her back through her legs to the bottom rib on her belly.

  Cut large hourglass shapes out of old T-shirts or flannel sheets. The length will be what you measured from the bottom rib on her back through her legs to the bottom rib on her belly. The widest part of the hourglass should be equal to three-quarters of her "waist" measurement.

  Put the cloth on your dog so that the narrow part of the hourglass runs the between her legs. Make a mark where her tail is.

  Take the cloth off of your dog and cut a hole for her tail. Use the diaper as a template to make as many as you feel are necessary. A good average is 10 to 12 diapers.

  Put the cloth on your dog so that the narrow part of the hourglass runs the between her legs. Gently pull her tail through the hole and tie the corners of the hourglass around her "waist."

  Check the diaper throughout the day and change as often as necessary.
