What Kind of Dogs Can Live in Apartments?

Dogs are man's best friends, but man isn't always a good friend to his dog. Dogs need a lot of attention and a proper environment to be at their healthiest and happiest. Their well-being often depends more on how their owners care for them than on the size of their homes. Dog breeds of every size can live in apartments. Always check your lease to see whether your building restricts dog size.
  1. Toy Breeds

    • Toy breeds make up the majority of apartment dogs in the United States. Among the most popular are the Chihuahua, miniature pinscher, Pomeranian and pug. Chihuauas require little exercise but are sensitive to cold temperatures. Miniature pinschers are energetic and active, and they are comfortable in apartments where they are played with regularly and get daily walks.

Pomeranians are puffy, hairy dogs that are loyal companions and require more playtime than walks. Pugs love to be with people and require a minimal amount of daily exercise.

    Small Breeds

    • Among the most popular small breeds of dog for apartments are the bassett hound, beagle, Yorkshire terrier and bichon frise. Bassett hounds possess mild temperaments and are good in apartments where they can get long walks outside. Beagles are natural hunting dogs and love company and sniffing out scents. They are good for apartments where they can get daily outdoor activity.

Yorkshire terriers, or "yorkies," require minimal exercise but do need to spend lots of time around people. They should not be left alone for long periods of time. The bichon frise requires daily exercise and walks. This breed does not shed and is good for apartments with allergy sufferers.

    Medium Breeds

    • The two best medium-size dog breeds for apartment dwellers are the cocker spaniel and the poodle. Cocker spaniels are smart, docile dogs that do best with families. This sporting breed requires lots of activity and exercise.

Poodles have a hypoallergenic coat and are a good choice for apartments with allergy sufferers, but they do require professional grooming. Poodles need daily exercise. They are intelligent dogs that respond well to obedience training.

    Large Breeds

    • All large breeds of dog require more daily exercise than other breeds, but many do well in apartments and do not require yards. Some popular large breeds for apartment life include the boxer, collie, golden retriever and German shepherd.

Boxers are known for their love of human affection and are good for apartments with children. Collies can be couch potatoes and might require walks only daily. Golden retrievers can adapt to any environment if they receive daily exercise. However, their thick coats require frequent brushing. German shepherds are fun-loving and loyal, and they make excellent guard dogs.
