What Is a Calm Breed of Toy Dog?

There are a variety of toy breeds, ranging from the Maltese to the Toy Fox Terrier. While the toy breeds share common characteristics when it comes to size and weight, there are some differences in temperament. For example, the Maltese is a calm breed, while the Toy Fox Terrier has a great deal of energy.

  1. Maltese

    • One toy breed that is both calm and elegant is the Maltese. Classified as a companion dog, the Maltese has long white hair and is not known for shedding. The Maltese temperament is one of extreme gentleness, and the breed is not nervous or high-strung. Despite its diminutive size, the Maltese is an extremely hardy dog.

    Shih Tzu

    • Another toy breed known for having a calm temperament is the Shih Tzu. As with the Maltese, the Shih Tzu is a long-haired elegant breed. The hypoallergenic nature of the Shih Tzu's coat makes it an ideal breed for anyone suffering from canine-related allergies. The Shih Tzu is both a companion and a house pet.

    Bichon Frise

    • The Bichon Frise is a quiet dog that spends a great deal of time bonding with its owners. As with the Maltese and the Shih Tzu, they have long hair that requires grooming, but they don't shed and are hypoallergenic. Bichon Frises tend to be a little aloof with strangers but warm up quickly.

    Italian Greyhound

    • Another toy breed to consider when looking for a calm dog is the Italian Greyhound. This member of the hound family is extremely affectionate and loyal to a fault. Its short hair is practically non-shedding and these dogs are content to be lap dogs. The only caution to consider is the extremely delicate nature of the Italian Greyhound's bones. This particular toy breed isn't recommended for households with smaller children, as they're easily injured.

    Training

    • To make sure a toy breed is calm, some basic training is recommended. Although some dogs are instinctively on the calmer side, using training techniques such as "sit" and "down" will go a long way to making the dog remain calm around its owner. Going through training also builds a lasting bond between owner and dog.
