How to Deal With Walking Dogs in the Rain

Although some dogs enjoy a walk in the rain, most dogs would prefer to stay dry. Because an owner needs to walk a dog on a daily basis for exercise and for elimination, chances are good that a dog will occasionally walk in the rain. There are a few ways to reduce a dog's exposure to the rain. Making the dog as comfortable as possible is the main goal.

Choose a covered area if possible. There are some covered areas outdoors that allow for dog walking. Another option is to find an area with a lot of trees. The trees provide a degree of coverage which reduces the amount of rain that gets on the dog.

Attach a pet umbrella to the dog's collar. Pet stores sell pet umbrellas that manage to keep a dog dry for the most part.

    • 3

Put a coat and/or boots on the dog. Pet stores sell rain coats for dogs in a variety of colors, materials and styles. There are waterproof coats in addition to wind-resistant coats. Some coats even have Velcro straps that make it easier to keep the coat in place. Boots are also an option for keeping the dog's paws and legs dry. Most dogs probably won't like wearing the boots, but you can give them a try.

Take dog treats with you on the walk. During the walk give the dog a few treats to make him feel a little better about being out in the rain. The dog learns to associate the treats with the rain.

Dry the dog with towels as soon as you get home. Getting the dog dry will make walking in the rain less of an issue over time.
