How to Foster a Dog for Someone in the Military

As of the summer of 2011, the U.S. military was involved in three war zones. Military personnel own dogs and, when they are ordered to deploy, they must find a family member or pet foster home to care for their dogs while they are overseas. Foster families for dogs house and care for military dogs, providing housing, medical care and shelter for time periods ranging from three months to 13 months.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill out a foster home application from an organization that sponsors pet foster homes. Pay attention to every question on the application and fill in every blank.

    • 2

Fill out a pet foster home/military service member written pet care agreement (see Reference section). This form covers all aspects of fostering a military service member's dog while the service member is deployed to a war zone.

    • 3

Take care of the military service member's dog in your home as you care for your own family's pet. Provide food, water and medical care in compliance with the written and signed pet care agreement.

    • 4

Keep the dog on a leash at any time it is outside your house. If the dog spends any time in your backyard, ensure that it is supervised outdoors.

    • 5

Foster the dog knowing that, when the military service member redeploys to the U.S., he will be picking his dog up and resuming custody of his pet.
