How to Calm Dogs Afraid of Thunder

Many dogs are frightened by loud thunderstorms. Veterinarians call this "storm phobia." If a dog is frightened by a thunderstorm, he may howl, hide, run away or damage things in the house during a storm. The condition is often progressive. So as a dog grows older, the symptoms may become worse. This phobia can also cause psychological problems for the dog, making it fearful of other things as well. But there are a few ways to help keep a dog calm during a thunderstorm that can gradually help him get over his fear.

Bring the dog inside the home. The thunderstorm will be less scary if the dog is inside and surrounded by four walls. Also, if the dog is inside (as opposed to being in the yard), he is less likely to try to run away to avoid the noise.

    • 2

Comfort and cuddle the dog. Let him hang out with you or other members of the family. Let the dog stay with you or near you during the worse part of the storm. Give the dog reassurance by petting him and letting him know that everything is going to be fine. It helps if you are calm yourself.

    • 3

Give the dog treats or his favorite food as the thunder roars outside. This is particularly helpful if you began this practice when the dog was still a puppy. The dog learns to associate loud noise with good things like treats.

    • 4

Place the dog in his crate. A crate is a dog's safe place, a private haven. Putting the dog inside his own crate may calm him down.

    • 5

Compete with the loud noise. Turn on a radio to play music that the dog finds soothing and calming. Another option is to turn on the television or a fan to drown out the sound of the thunder.

Play with the dog to keep him distracted. Scatter the treats around the house and make a game of it. Put out his favorite toys. Play his favorite games to keep him occupied during the storm.
