Dogs Similar in Size to an English Bulldog

American Bulldogs are large dogs that live approximately 11 to 12 years. They are great family dogs because they are good with kids, outgoing, energetic and friendly. Males reach 58.4 to 68.6 cm in height and females reach 54.6 to 63.5 cm in height. A male American Bulldog can also range in weight from 75 to 125 pounds. A female can weigh anywhere from 60 to 90 pounds. If an American Bulldog does not fit your lifestyle, but you are interested in a dog similar in size to an American Bulldog, there are a few options.

  1. Collie

    • Collies live between 12 and 14 years. Female collies are between 55.9 and 61 centimeters high. Male collies are between 61 and 66 centimeters high; they also range from from 60 to 75 pounds. Females weigh between 50 and 65 pounds when full grown. Collies are good with kids and are also sentimental, protective and easy to train. They do shed more than English Bulldogs, though, and do not like strangers; you must supervise them when they meet new people.

    Boxer

    • Boxers live for around 12 years. Both male and female boxers range from 53.3 to 63.5 centimeters in height. They also weigh between 50 and 75 pounds. Boxers are muscular, solid dogs and must be supervised when around young children. They are confident, intelligent and active dogs that need a lot of exercise. Health problems are also associated with this breed, like a tendency toward deafness.

    English Setter

    • An English Setter lives for about 14 years. The males range in height from 63.5 to 68.6 cm, and females range from 54.6 to 61 cm. Both males and females weigh between 55 and 66 pounds. English Setters are good with kids, easy to train, gentle and affectionate. However, some are shy and fearful. This breed also requires a lot of exercise and the English Setter tends to drool.

    German Shepherd

    • German Shepherds live for about 12 to 13 years. The females are between 55.9 and 61 cm in height, and males are between 61 and 66 cm. Both males and females weigh between 85 and 95 pounds. German Shepherds can be good with kids, but they need to be socialized with them. This breed is also intelligent, calm and obedient. However, they do not warm up to strangers and can also be aggressive.
