Instructions
Enroll your dog in obedience classes as early as possible to learn how to control your dog and to encourage it to listen to your commands. Both the boxer and American bulldog grow to a large size so it is important that you raise them to be obedient. Allow your dog to meet other people and dogs at the classes to get it socialized. Once you have successfully completed obedience training, continue on to agility training. The boxer excels at this activity due to its high energy and intelligence.
Show your dog that you are its pack leader to prevent it from developing behavioral problems. Feed the dog after the family has finished eating as the boxer and bulldog know that the alpha dogs eat first and the subordinates eat second. Make the dog sit and wait quietly before giving food or affection. Do not allow the dog to sleep on your bed or jump on your furniture, as these are positions of dominance.
Take your dog on a long walk every day to help drain its excess energy, and to prevent it from becoming frustrated and destructive. Walk slightly in front of the dog to encourage the dog to see you as its leader rather than its follower. Give a quick sideways tug on the leash if the dog attempts to pull or overtake you. After a walk or outing, make the dog wait until all other family members have entered the house before allowing it to go inside.
Brush your dog's coat once a week with a firm, bristled brush to remove any dirt or dead hair. Both the boxer and bulldog are short-haired and do not require much grooming, although the folds of skin around the nose can gather dirt. Clean the folds at least once a week using a wash cloth dipped in tepid water.
