Instructions
Visit your local animal rescue center to see if there is a shar-pei available for adoption, or contact a re-homing center that specializes in shar-peis, such as the Mid-Atlantic Chinese Shar-Pei Rescue Operation, which is based in California.
Inform the staff at the center when you find a shar-pei that you are interested in. Ask to meet the dog to determine if it has the right temperament for you and your family. Find out as much as you can from the staff, for example whether the shar-pei is at ease with children, and gets along with other dogs or cats.
Be prepared to answer questions concerning your home and lifestyle. A member of staff at the center will question you to ensure that you can provide a suitable home for the shar-pei. Be prepared to furnish references, as some centers require them.
Make a cash donation to the animal shelter. This will go toward helping the organization to provide homes for other abandoned dogs.
How to Adopt a Shar-Pei
The charmingly worry-faced Chinese shar-pei is a loyal and affectionate breed, not unfriendly to other dogs if it is socialized with them. The dog requires daily brushing and exercise and firm leadership to establish the owner's dominance. If you feel the breed is well suited for your household, make your family and a dog happy by adopting a shar-pei from a rescue center.
