The Best Dogs for Working People

For people who have jobs that require them to spend long hours in the office and/or endure long commutes, committing to owning a dog may seem like a daunting experience. Most dogs require daily exercise, grooming and attention, which could prove too time-consuming for many working people. However, choosing a low-maintenance dog breed can make the commitment feasible and satisfying for the owner and pet alike.
  1. Chihuahua

    • For working professionals who call an apartment home, a chihuahua is an ideal choice because of its size and minimal space requirements. It's one of the smallest dog breeds in the world, and there's no need to have a big house, or even a yard, to comfortably house a chihuahua. While it's wise to occasionally walk a chihuahua, this type of dog does not have demanding exercise needs. Many chihuahuas have very short fur that requires minimal grooming, but long-haired ones should be brushed daily.

    Greyhound

    • Although greyhounds are large, and are known for their racing talent, they tend to be content in smaller spaces and do not require excessive exercise. These dogs have short, smooth coats that require little grooming. Short walks of 20 to 30 minutes daily should keep a greyhound fit and healthy. These dogs tend to be naturally obedient and may not require training, unless there are small children in the home.

    Dachshund

    • While the dachshund is known for its strong-willed nature, the breed is generally fun-loving and loyal, making it a good choice for first-time dog owners. Dachshunds can have either short or long hair, but both types benefit from daily brushing, which stimulates circulation and provides a bonding opportunity. These dogs can be energetic, but their small size and short legs make daily exercise a laid-back activity that generally does not require extensive amounts of time or energy.

    Bulldog

    • Hefty bulldogs can weigh in at about 50 to 60 pounds, but they do well with apartment living. They do not have excessive amounts of energy, are not very interested in exercise. If you're exhausted after a long day at work, you will not have to feel guilty about flopping down on the sofa and relaxing with your bulldog. These dogs have short hair that requires minimal brushing, but their folds should be cleaned from time to time.
