How to Trace a Dog

When attempting to trace a lost dog, a dog chip helps you locate your lost pet quickly. A dog chip is a small procedure that is carried out by a veterinarian. The chip holds also holds data with your contact information. In a situation where your dog is recovered by a rescue center, the rescuers scan the dog to retrieve its home address and owner's contact number. If you have lost your dog and it does not have a chip there are still a number of methods you can use to increase the chances of getting your dog back safely.

Instructions

Book your dog an appointment with your local veterinarian to have a small microchip planted under the dog's skin with your contact information on it. If your microchipped dog has gone missing call the microchip provider to report that your dog is missing.

Print out flyers, featuring a clear, recent photograph of your dog if your dog is lost. Include clear contact information and a description of any identifiable markings on the posters. You may also want to include the offer of a reward for finding the dog. Pass the flyers around and pin them up in visible places, such as on trees in the area that your dog went missing. Ask local shop owners for permission to put up a poster in the window.

Contact every rescue center in the surrounding area to ask if your dog has been brought in. Leave your contact information with staff at the center in case your dog is found at a later time. Visit rescue centers to look for the dog yourself in case it looks different in any way after being lost.
