How to Sew a Ribbon Onto a Dog's Collar

Some people dress and groom their pets with great enthusiasm. Owners dress pets in expensive sweaters, fancy collars and paint their nails. Some of this treatment can be quite costly. However, sewing a colorful ribbon on your dog's collar could be a pretty and frugal substitute. One benefit to using ribbon instead of purchasing a studded collar is that a ribbon is washable.

Be sure to sew with a doubled thread.

Prepare a large needle and strong thread, taking care to thread the needle with a double thread. To do this, thread the needle and pull the two ends of the thread until both are the same length. Then knot both ends together. Dogs can be rambunctious and so can their playmates. Using a double thread is a smart move.

A hair ribbon might fall off -- a collar ribbon is more secure.

Find the center of the ribbon, mark it with a pen and position the ribbon exactly where you intend to sew it. Affixing the center of the ribbon to the collar, instead of tying a bow and then sewing it, allows you to iron the ribbon and retie it after laundering. Tying the bow after it is sewn on will also hide stitches.

Use just a small drop of fabric glue.

Use a temporary fabric adhesive to secure the ribbon. A temporary fabric adhesive will not damage the material -- just in case you decide to remove the ribbon later. This adhesive is necessary to secure the ribbon while you sew. Allow the adhesive to dry.

Protect your finger as you sew.

Use your needle and thread to secure the ribbon. Try to hide all of your stitches from view. It is a good idea to put extra stitches in the ribbon so that it will remain secure.

Use a double knot to tie off the end of your stitches. After you have completed your double knot, run the needle under and through the ribbon to hide the end thread.
