How to Make a Pet Hideaway

As much as your pet likes spending time with you, he may occasionally crave personal time in his "cave." If you've ever noticed your pet hiding in a small closet or under a bed or side table, he may be acting on his natural cave dwelling instincts. You can make a simple pet hideaway to give your pet the dark, quiet, enclosed private space he naturally desires.

Instructions

    • 1

Find a cardboard box small enough for your pet to feel cozy, but large enough for your pet to stand up, lie down and turn around inside. As an alternative to a box, you can remove the door of an old cabinet, or use a commercial pet carrier with the door open or removed.

    • 2

Place the box in a quiet, low-traffic room.

    • 3

Orient the box so the opening faces out, allowing your pet to crawl in and out at his leisure.

    • 4

Line the box with one of your pet's favorite blankets so he will recognize his scent in the hideaway.

    • 5

Lure your pet into the box with a toy or a favorite treat, or spray a pet pheromone product into the box. Your pet will soon associate his "cave" with positive stimuli, and will feel comfortable and safe in his personal hideaway. Avoid disturbing your pet while he's relaxing in the hideaway.
