How Can I Help My Yorkie Get Over His Fear of Other Dogs?

Small in size but big in personality, the Yorkshire terrier is one of the most popular toy canine companion breeds in the U.S. For the most part, yorkies do not get along well with other animals including dogs unless they grow up with them, according to Yorshire Terrier Savvy. This can become a problem when you are out on walks, go visiting friends who own dogs or want to introduce another dog to your household. But, don't fret, your Yorkie can learn to love other dogs with the right regimen.

Instructions

    • 1

Stay calm around other dogs. Interact positively with other dogs and play, touch and praise them in front of your Yorkie. Your behavior will eventually rub off on your dog by setting an example for him.

    • 2

Reward your Yorkie with his favorite treat every time another dog passes no matter how he reacts to the other dog. This will show him that another dog in his presence is always a good thing.

    • 3

Provide plenty of opportunities to socialize. Let your Yorkie meet dogs with off leash play sessions to build confidence around other dogs. Set up a trainer-moderated small dog playgroup with Yorkies or other toy breed dogs.

Find a good trainer with small dog experience to guide you, if you have the financial resources, set up private in home lessons and attend group training classes with other small dogs.
