Add two teaspoons of cayenne pepper to one cup of plain tap water and pour this mixture into a new plastic spray bottle. This is the most effective natural chewing deterrent according to Richard K. Davis, DVM. It is important that you utilize a new spray bottle instead of recycling one from your cleaning cabinet to prevent accidental poisoning. Shake the bottle to mix the concoction thoroughly.

Locate the areas or items your dog appears to favor. According to Dr. Davis, key indicators include bite marks or lots of hair in areas where your pet frequents. Dr. Davis also recommends removing items from your pet's reach whenever possible. This will remove the temptation and prevent overuse of the deterrent.

Spot test fabrics in order to make sure that your dog deterrent mixture will not permanently mar your item. Spray or dab your cayenne pepper mixture in an inconspicuous area and wait for 24 hours before applying more liberally. Lightly colored fabrics tend to stain more easily than darker ones, so be sure to test them before spraying.

Apply the deterrent by simply spraying a light coating of the mixture across any item that attracts your dog. Refrain from soaking the items, as your dog's nose is extremely sensitive, and only a small amount will be necessary to do the job. Larger amounts may cause unnecessary damage to your items.

Reapply every two to three days in order to reinforce the message. The cayenne pepper spray mixture will lose some of its effectiveness over time, especially if the items being treated are outside or are exposed to water frequently.
