How to Keep a Dog Cool in a Camper Shell

Keeping a dog in a camper shell requires air circulation and temperature control. Dogs must not be held in a camper shell in extremely hot conditions. The dog owner is responsible for the health and safety of the animal and failure to maintain a comfortable situation constitutes animal cruelty. Keeping your pet cool is easily accomplished for short period of time, but the dog must not be left in the hot camper shell for a long period of time.

Supply the dog with a large bowl of cold water. Drinking cold water helps the dog remain cool on hot days. Add ice to the bowl of water during periods of extremely hot weather.

    • 2

Open the windows while driving and parked. The dog must have air flow to prevent overheating. The supply of fresh air also allows the dog to breath comfortably and reduce car sickness.

    • 3

Park in the shade to keep the dog cool. Parking in direct sunlight raises the temperature inside of the camper shell. Park in the shadiest area possible to lower the temperature and create a comfortable environment for the dog.

Store a dog cooling bandanna in the freezer and tie it around the neck of the dog before traveling in a camper shell. The cold bandanna helps cool the dog in hot weather. Leave the bandanna on the dog until it is no longer cold.
