Instructions
Give the dog a treat when you walk through the door. Gently toss the treat to the floor a few feet from where you are standing. Do not reach out for the dog. Eventually she will associate you with the treats and look forward to your company. Chihuahuas can be picky eaters, so make certain that the treat you are offering is something that she loves.
Sit down on the floor so that you are closer to the Chihuahua's level. Sit quietly and toss treats several feet from where you are sitting. Gradually toss the treats so that they land closer to you, luring the dog toward you.
Speak very quietly saying "Good dog" and the dog's name when she moves forward. When she moves close enough, hold a treat in the palm of your hand. Keep still until the dog takes the treat. When she has accepted several times, hold your hand out and let she sniff you. Praise and gently stroke her.
Bring the dog a toy; for instance, a hard rubber toy with food stuffed inside, or a plush toy. Vinyl toys are too easy to chew into pieces and ingested, which can cause intestinal blockage and even death.
Sit on the floor and toss the toy so that it lands close to you. Speak softly and playfully while trying to engage the dog in a game of fetch. Praise her enthusiastically when she interacts with you.
Walk the dog using a harness and a leash. Like most dogs, Chihuahuas love their walks, and this activity will build a positive association between the dog and you. Praise the dog during the walk.
Wrap the dog in a warm blanket when she is comfortable allowing you to do this. Being a dog of the tropics, Chihuahuas are cold by nature and love being cuddled. Hold her on your lap and talk to her soothingly, while gently stroking her head.
