Good Dogs for Small Homes

The United States is a nation of dog lovers. Approximately 78 million dogs share a home with humans, according to the 2009-2010 National Pet Owners Survey. Some people own big breeds while others own smaller, more docile types. For people who live in small homes or apartments, there are several breeds that may be more suited for confined spaces than others.
  1. English Bulldog

    • The English bulldog is perfect for apartment or small homes. In fact they are perfectly suited for the indoor life and only need a yard or a short walk to get some exercise. They do not handle extreme weather well as they find it hard to cool off in the heat and can easily get cold thanks to their short coat, which does not provide much protection. Being just 12 to 16 inches in height means they do not need large spaces for sleeping or general living.

    Chihuahua

    • The chihuahua is a tiny toy-sized dog and are great choices for homeowners who want to share a small space with a lovable dog. Chihuahuas need a daily walk like any other dog. Be warned, however, they these dogs tend to bark. Although there are many reasons for barking -- asserting dominance, excitement or seeking attention -- a lack of exercise worsens the problem. Be sure chihuahuas stretch their legs on a frequent basis to reduce excessive barking.

    Italian Greyhound

    • The Italian greyhound is very similar to a standard greyhound you see at the racetrack, but a lot smaller. A playful, keen, affectionate, intelligent and kind-mannered breed, the Italian greyhound is perfect for apartment life and does not need access to a large yard. They should be walked outside daily on a leash and allowed to run freely in an enclosed area such as a yard or dog run to burn off energy. They are also easy to groom.

    Prazsky Krysarik

    • The Prazsky Krysarik, said to be the smallest breed in the world, makes an ideal pet in a small home. They are active dogs that need a daily walk and lots of play to burn off excess energy. Access to a small yard or enclosure where off the lead play can occur helps meet this little pup's needs.
