How to Harness a Dog

Walking your dog is not only great exercise for both of you, it is also a fun activity. For your dog's safety, a harness is a better choice than a collar. There are various reasons for choosing a harness over a collar. Dogs can slip out of a collar much easier than a harness. Pet owners have more control over the dog when wearing a harness. And, there are medical reasons not to put a collar on your dog. A harness may look difficult to put on but it can be a simple process with a little practice.

Instructions

    • 1

Begin with the appropriate size harness for your dog. Measure the circumference around your dog's chest near the breastbone. It is important for the harness to fit comfortably.

    • 2

Use treats to encourage cooperation from your dog. Straddle your dog with the rear facing you. Give your dog a small treat and a lot of praise while putting on the harness. Your dog will associate the process as a positive behavior.

    • 3

Have the metal ring facing upward and toward the back of the dog. Place your dog's head through the loop with the metal ring sitting on the dog's back.

    • 4

Lift one leg and insert it in one of the openings on one side of the breast plate. Repeat the procedure with the second leg and check to be sure the breast plate is evenly positioned.

    • 5

Check for a secure fit of the harness in the front and under the chest area. You want to make sure your dog can't slip out of the harness over its head or that its legs don't get caught in the harness if left too loose. The harness is now securely in place.
