How to Design a Dog-Friendly Yard

A dog can be a wonderful companion, especially if it can run around in your backyard to get exercise and enjoy the outdoors. It is important to make sure your yard is dog friendly before allowing your pet to spend time there. Fencing is necessary to prevent your dog from running off or posing a danger to others. Also, some types of plants are beneficial to dogs, while others can be hazardous and should be avoided.

Instructions

    • 1

Install fencing around your yard to prevent your dog from leaving the area or possibly endangering others. Have fencing professionally installed, or do it yourself if you are capable of the task.

    • 2

Plant tall grass in part of your yard. Dogs enjoy exploring and will be happy to have this area to play in. Purchase grasses from a hardware or plant store and plant in soil.

    • 3

Plant herbs such as thyme, basil, lavender and dill to help ward off insects like fleas that may attach themselves to your dog. Place herb seeds slightly under soil and water at least every other day. You can also find small herb plants, which may be substituted for seeds, at farmers' markets and plant stores.

    • 4

Plant wheatgrass in your yard or in a small wooden planter box for your dog to graze on. Wheatgrass is a healthy treat dogs enjoy. Simply place wheat berry seeds a few inches under soil and water regularly to promote growth.

    • 5

Place dog toys, such as bones and chew toys, throughout the yard for your dog to play with.
