How to Find a Husky

If you're looking for an intelligent, energetic and friendly canine companion, the Siberian husky may be the breed for you. These dogs were bred for endurance and love to run. A working breed, they require a job to do (or at least a way to stay entertained). They are extremely social and typically do well in households with children and other pets. You can purchase a Siberian husky from a breeder or adopt one from an animal shelter.

Instructions

  1. Locate a Husky Breeder

    • 1

Visit the American Kennel Club's home website, www.akc.org. The AKC keeps lists of registered breeders. Get a recommendation from the AKC to ensure that your husky is coming from a reputable breeder rather than a puppy mill.

    • 2

Click the "Breeds" tab on the AKC's homepage.

    • 3

Look for the "Breeder Referral" link under "contacts." This is located approximately halfway down the page. Follow the link.

    • 4

Scroll down the page until you find the listing for Siberian husky. Dog breeds are listed alphabetically on the page.

    • 5

Follow the link provided for the Siberian husky breeder directory website.

    • 6

Select your state. A list of breeders in your state will be provided. Write down the contact information for each breeder.

    • 7

Call each breeder in your state or area. Ask about puppies that are available, when they will be available for purchase and what is required to purchase a puppy. Make an appointment to visit and meet the puppies before committing to purchase one. This will give you an opportunity to select the puppy that is right for you. You may also ask if there are any upcoming dog shows where this breeder will be showing. Attending a dog show is a good way to meet a variety of breeders in one place.

    Adopt a Shelter Husky

    • 8

Locate animal shelters or Humane Societies in your area by searching online for "animal shelters" in your state or area. Twenty-eight percent of all dogs in shelters are purebred dogs.

    • 9

Call animal shelters in your area and ask if they have any Siberian huskies available for adoption. If the answer is yes, ask about the husky's history, age, temperament and health. Some shelters may not know this information if a dog hasn't been with them long enough, but you should always find out as much about a shelter dog as you can.

    • 10

Make appointments with animal shelters to meet their huskies. Spend time with the dogs by playing with them, petting them and talking to them.

    • 11

Visit your local PetsMart or Petco on Saturday. Animal shelters bring their dogs to these locations and place them up for adoption. You will be able to browse available dogs and see if any huskies are available.

    • 12

Perform a search for a breed-specific rescue organization. Using the search engine of your choice, put in the keywords Siberian Husky Rescue and your city or state. You will get a list of contacts of people who are rescuing this specific breed. Many times, these are breeders who are engaged in rescue as well..
