Toys
-
If your dog is feeling uncomfortable in a new home make sure he has a lot of toys to keep him busy and excited. Buy him new toys and mix them in with some of his favorites that went through the move with him. Play with him in various areas of the house as well as outside to help him become comfortable with the new surroundings. Keep a few toys scattered through the house so he feels comfortable exploring on his own to find them.
Treats
-
Treats are commonly used in training and for positive reinforcement. This can be used to your advantage when trying to get your dog comfortable to a new home. Have a supply of his favorite treats on hand and walk him into each room of the house. Give him a treat as he enters each room and play with him for a few minutes before moving on to the next room. After going through the house, bring him outside to play and give him a treat as he enters the yard.
Beds
-
A comfortable place to relax is very important, especially when in an environment you are not used to. You want your dog to be able to relax no matter where he is in your new home. Place a small bed in a few choice rooms in the house so he knows he can rest anywhere. Placing a small bed in high traffic areas such as the kitchen, living room, and a bedroom will help him become comfortable with the area since he will relate them with the people he is comfortable with.
His own personal area
-
Giving your dog his own personal space will give him an area to go whenever he feels uncomfortable in his new surroundings. Designate an area in a popular room of the house as just his area. Keep his main bed there so he has a sense of consistency. Keep his favorite toys there so he has something he is familiar with. Make sure to spend time together in that room with him as a family and he will, in time, open up to his new home.
