How to Adopt a Pet in Kansas City

Animals around the world enter shelters and humane societies daily as a result of harmful treatment and neglect. After entering the facilities, animals receive care and affection from employees while waiting for adoption from a family. Pet adoption differs from purchasing a pet from a pet store or breeder. To adopt a pet in in Kansas City, Kansas, you must undergo an application process to ensure a good fit for you and the animal.

      Fill out a pet adoption application from the Humane Society of Greater Kansas City. Download the application form online from the Humane Society website and email it to [email protected] or fax to 913-596-1000. Alternatively, you can visit the society to fill out and submit your application in person.

      Participate in an interview with the director of the humane society. After your application is processed, the director will meet with you in person or by phone for a short interview. Questions in the interview pertain to your living situation, the type of pet you want and your pet ownership history.

      Meet with the animals available for adoption with the assistance of an adoption counselor. If the humane society approves your adoption, an adoption counselor will invite you to come meet the available pets. The adoption counselor will inform you of the history and needs of the pets you show interest in, and answer any questions. Adoption hours are from Monday to Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

      Choose the pet you wish to adopt and allow for the waiting period to finish. Once you choose a pet, the humane society typically does not allow you to take the pet home the same day. The pet may need spaying or neutering, and you need time to seriously consider whether the pet is right for you. The humane society reserves the pet for you up to one day for a small fee pending your final decision.

      Take your new pet home. After the waiting period ends, visit the humane society to pay the relevant adoption fees, sign the adoption contract and pick up your new pet. Adoption fees cover vaccinations, spaying or neutering, toys, medication, food, adoption package, pet accessories and an informative video.
