Comparisons of Dog Breeds That Are Best for Children

Almost every child wants a dog. Yet not every dog breed is good for children. A rambunctious or clumsy child can easily injure a small toy breed dog. An assertive dog may have little patience with a curious toddler pulling its tail.

Most active dogs that like being touched, and that aren't startled by loud noises, will do well with children. However, certain dog breeds are repeatedly recognized as especially suitable pets for children.
  1. Labrador Retriever

    • Labrador Retrievers are a popular dog breed in the U.S.

In January 2011, the American Kennel Club named the Labrador Retriever the most popular dog breed in the United States for the 20th consecutive year. The Labrador's high energy level and natural protectiveness make it an ideal pet for children. Easy to train and eager to please, Labradors are often used for law enforcement work and as assistance dogs for the handicapped. Labradors' coats are yellow, black or chocolate. This breed sheds seasonally and has an even temperament.

    Golden Retriever

    • Golden Retrievers are very patient with children.

The Golden Retriever's extremely patient nature makes it a perfect pet for younger children. Originally bred to hunt and retrieve birds, the Golden Retriever needs daily exercise. Its willingness to play make meeting the dog's exercise requirements easy and fun for kids. Like Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers are often used as assistance dogs for the handicapped and in law enforcement search and rescue operations. The breed's color ranges from light to dark gold. It sheds seasonally and needs regular brushing.

    Beagle

    • The compact sized Beagle is a good companion for kids.

Widely known as Charlie Brown's dog in the Peanuts comic strip, the Beagle is a popular breed for families. The Beagle's sturdy build, friendly, easy-going demeanor, compact size and willingness to play make this hunting dog a good companion for children. The beagle's color varies but it can be any true hound color. Its short coat is easy to care for. Beagles usually get along well with other pets.

    Collie

    • Collies are known for having very little dog odor.

Collies are gentle, affectionate dogs that enjoy protecting their families. While not as active as other dog breeds recommended for children, Collies require daily walks and exercise. The breed's coat can be a combination of sable and white, tri-color, blue merle or white. Although the coat appears to require a huge amount of maintenance, Collie's only need to be brushed about once a week outside of shedding season. Collies are known for having very little doggie odor.

    Other Kid-Friendly Breeds

    • Mixed breed dogs, or mutts, are often excellent pets for kids.

Other dog breeds often recommended for children are the New Foundland, the Irish Setter and the Poodle. The New Foundland is a gentle giant who is very kind and patient with children. They are great swimmers and demonstrate lifesaving instincts in water. The breed tends to drool and shed and its plush coat needs regular brushing.

The playful, energetic Irish Setter needs lots of exercise. Its long coat requires regular grooming.

The Poodle is a very smart, gentle dog and good for kids with allergies, as the breed sheds very little.

Mixed breed dogs, or mutts, often make excellent pets for children. Look for a dog that appears happy and enthusiastic at the sight of children. Be wary of signs of canine stress such as yawning and frequently looking away. Avoid dogs that seem sensitive to touch or noise.
