These dogs, like all popular dog breeds, are sometimes bred in puppy mills, however. There are certain steps you can take to help make sure you are getting a healthy chihuahua from a respectable breeder and not from a puppy mill. You may also choose to adopt a chihuahua from rescue groups in your area.
Instructions
Contact your local humane society for information on chihuahua rescue groups that may exist in your area. Once you have this information, you can contact the rescue organizations to see whether it has a suitable match for your home.
Visit only rescue groups or breeders recommended by the American Kennel Club (AKC) to avoid getting a puppy from a puppy mill and ensure that you are going to visit a reputable organization or breeder.
Arrange a time to visit the puppy on the premises and bring someone with you. Although it is unlikely you will fall victim to criminal behavior if you are visiting a known organization or breeder, having someone with you provides an extra degree of security.
Ask for copies of the veterinary records for the puppy, which will include vaccination dates and other relevant health information. If available, you should also be supplied with the AKC registration papers for the puppy before buying. Reputable breeders or rescue organizations will have documentation of the puppy's vaccinations and any other relevant information. Make sure you get a guarantee of good health for the puppy.
Take the chihuahua to your own veterinarian for a health check within a week of adopting the chihuahua. If any problems are noted during this visit, you should contact the breeder or organization from which you purchased the puppy.
