How to Care for a Pet at Home

A new pet is a big responsibility, be it a small or large animal, because they depend on you to keep them healthy and happy. Caring for a pet in your home takes some important steps and considerations to ensure that your pet has a good environment and life. Learning how to care for a pet at home is the first step in creating a pleasant home for whatever animal friend you may bring into it.

Instructions

    • 1

Research your specific pet prior to bringing it home. You want to make sure that your home can accommodate the pet with regard to such things as the size of the animal, how much space it'll need, the cost of taking care of the pet and the time it will need from you daily. If you cannot fulfill the general care requirements of the animal, then it's best not to try and care for it in your home.

    • 2

Set up a sleeping area for your pet. This can be a large pillow by your bed for a dog or a cat bed for cats. If you are bringing home a larger animal, such as a horse or other farm animal, this means ensuring you've got a stable set up for the animal when it isn't out walking in whatever open area you provide for it.

    • 3

Set up a living space for your animal. Caged animals such as hamsters or snakes need to be placed where cages won't get knocked over or have objects falling on them and where things like aquarium lights or heating devices can be plugged in. For dogs, consider animal gates to prevent them from entering rooms in your home without supervision. For larger, outdoor animals, make sure you have a fenced-off area where they can roam and get exercise.

    • 4

Set up a food station where your pet will eat. Make sure it's an area you can clean easily, as feeding areas need to be cleaned to prevent your pet's food from bacterial growth. For caged animals, set up food and water in one corner of the cage. Cat and dog food can be placed in a pantry or laundry room. For outdoor animals, consider having large basins set out to pour food into near their living quarters.

Research veterinarians in your area that have expertise in dealing with the health of your specific animal. Take your pet in or have the vet do a home visit to establish a vet care routine for the animal. Having a good veterinarian on hand will ensure quick and proper treatment at any signs of illness. Talk to the vet about the home routines you've set up for your pet to get tips or advice on changes you should make.
