Plan ahead for places to sleep. Check online what motels and hotels you will pass on your way, and find out if they allow pets. If you know you will be in the area on a certain day, make reservations before you leave for your trip.

Restrain your pet. If your pet is small, keep it in a cage or a container and restrain the bigger animals with a harness or a dog seat belt. Never let your animal loose in the car as it may end up disturbing you while you drive.

Give your pet enough space. Your pet should always have enough room to easily lie down in, stand up and change position. Make sure your pet is as comfortable as possible.

    • 4

Keep all the things your pet might need easily accessible. You will have to make regular stops for your pet's sake so bowls, leashes and other pet accessories should be easy to access. Do not forget to pack towels in case your pet gets sick.

Pack enough water and food for the trip. Do not rely on buying food at gas stations. If you get stuck in traffic, your pet will not understand why it did not get fed. Do not over-feed your pet if you want avoid it getting sick in the car. Stick to your pet's usual feeding routine.

Make regular stops. As a rule of thumb, if you have to take a break from driving, so does your pet. Take it out of the car each time you stop and allow it to stretch its legs. Do not forget to put the leash on before you take your pet out of the car to keep it from running away.

Be attentive to your pet. Even the most experienced traveling pets can get frustrated on long trips. Talk to your animal while you drive to keep it calm. Bring along its favorite toys. If your pet feels safe, it will be less stressed.
